중국은 인구대국이다. 공식적인 인구는 13억2185만명으로 나와 있다. 이중 불자는 얼마나 될까. 위키피디아의 자료(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhism_by_country#cite_note-82)에 따르면 전인구의 8%에서 80%까지라고 나와 있다. 불자인구로 본다면 1억5백만에서 10억5백만명까지 고무줄과 같은 통계라 볼 수 있다. 최대 10억명이 불자라고 하는데 이중 반만 잡아도 5억명이 불자임을 알 수 있다. 따라서 중국은 인구대국이면서 동시에 세계최대의 불교대국임을 알 수 있다.

 

중화권 불자인구는

 

그런데 중국본토만 불자가 있는 것은 아니다. 중국어를 사용하는 중화권 국가에서도 불교는 다수를 점하고 있기 때문이다. 이들 중화권 국가들의 불자는 주로 중국화교로 이루어져 있는데 대표적인 중화권 국가의 불자 인구를 보면 다음과 같다.

표를 보면 대만을 제외 하고 중국의 화교들이 진출 하고 있는 국가에서 불교가 유지 되고 있는 것을 알 수 있다. 그 중에서 주목 되는 곳이 말레이지아와 싱가포르이다.

 

말레이지아 같은 경우 국교가 회교임에도 불구 하고 22%로서 546만명이나 되는 불교인이 있는 것을 알 수 있다. 또 싱가포르는 거의 절반에 달하는 인구가 불교를 믿고 있으며 그 인구 또한 234만명이나 되는 것을 알 수 있다.

 

인터넷으로 본 중화권 불교음악

 

말레이지아와 싱가포르는 화교를 중심으로 한 불자들의 활약을 인터넷을 통하여 볼 수 있다. 주로 불교음악을 통하여 접하게 되는 이들 나라의 불교는 유명한 아티스트로서 말레이지아의 Imee Ooi(황혜음) 와 싱가포르의 보디찌따 그룹을 들 수 있다. 이들 아티스트들은 수 많은 감동적인 불교음악으로 인하여 불자들에게 잘 알려져 있다.

 

중국과 대만, 홍콩 그리고 말레이지아, 싱가포르등의 중국어문화권의 불교인들의 활약은 유튜브에서도 그대로 나타나고 있다. 유튜브에 등재 되어 있는 불교음악의 99%는 이들 중화권 국가에서 올린 불교음악이다. 따라서 중국어로 부르는 노래가 많고 또 한자어 자막이 나오는 것도 보통이다. 이들 노래를 보면 주로 관음신앙 또는 정토신앙에 관한 노래가 많지만 티벳관련 음악도 적지 않고 산스크리트나 빠알리어 관련 음악도 종종 보인다. 특히 빠알리어 관련 노래 중에 가장 인기 있는 주제라면 단연 자비송이다. 우리는 자비송이라 하지만 중화권에서는 자경(慈經)으로 더 잘려진 자비송의 빠알리어 제목은 멧따(Metta)이다.

 

새로운 버전의 자비송을 발견하고

 

멧따는 이미 Imee Ooi가 불러서 세계적인 히트곡이 되었지만 유튜브를 검색하는 과정에서 또 다른 버전을 찾게 되었다. 노래를 부른 이는 알 수 없고 음악동영상만 소개 되고 있다. 이 동영상에 대한 음성 파일도 인터넷 검색으로 찾을 수 있었다.
